ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS

 

I had quite a few good questions this time, so instead of choosing just  one for the newsletter, I’ll answer several of them over the next few weeks,

 

Q: There’s no interest payment or dividend on gold coins. Plus most foreign CDs don’t have an interest rate as high as we get here in the USA. How can the average investor work with that situation?

 

A: This is a very good question. First let’s start with the most basic principle of investing. Never put more than 20% of your money into any one investment. And that includes gold. Many financial planners recommend even less than the 20% rule for a maximum amount of any one investment in your portfolio. Gold is an important part of your portfolio, but it can’t be the only item.

 

Next, if you’re going to invest in the stock market for dividends, invest in another country’s stocks. Work with your broker on finding appropriate foreign stocks in a currency that you’re both comfortable with.  After the US dollar either gets a metal backing or somehow manages to recover some of its strength (hey I can dream, right?) then reconsider some US stocks. That will probably take at least a few more years, so in the meantime, think foreign.

 

Third, get some foreign CDs or bonds if you really want to buy CDs and bonds. You’ll gain money on the exchange rate, even if the interest rates aren’t as high as US interest rates. This will especially be true after the dollar continues to drop. Remember the US dollar dropped over 30% in 3 years and this trend is likely to worsen until the US revamps and gets a metal backed currency (like a gold or silver standard).

 

Lastly, the average investor doesn’t need to hold gold for a long time now in order to get a pay-off on the investment. Before the end of this year is out, we will probably get the “sell signal” You could make up to 35% return on this investment and some expect even more. That’s not bad for no interest payment or dividend.

 

Remember to purchase STANDARD gold coins, which are bought and sold by WEIGHT only. These include Gold Eagles, Maple Leafs, Kruggerands and the new US Buffaloes. Don’t pay more than necessary to get these coins. They’re like buying a commodity. There’s no advantage to paying more. Likewise, when it’s time to sell, this will be easier because you’re selling a commodity with a price that’s determined by weight and the price of gold.
