ANSWERING MORE OF YOUR QUESTIONS:

                             Time-Outs & New Starts

 

Thanks to a good set of questions you’ve sent me, I’m answering as many as possible over the coming few weeks.

 

Q: If a Time-Out renders big decisions fruitless, then what about small decisions, small projects that are started and finished in the time out period, such as sub-projects?

 

A: The answer to this question depends on exactly what the sub-project is. I often consider cleaning my desk to be a project or sub-project, depending on how much cleaning is needed. But cleaning your desk or office is actually FAVORED during a Time-Out. For that matter, any type of work where you are reviewing a pile of papers, finishing reports, or FINISHING most things are favored during a Time-Out.

 

What’s not favored in the way of a project or sub-project is something that has a future consequence to it. Sometimes the consequence is not too severe. We’ve probably all had times when we ordered lunch during a Time-Out and didn’t get what we ordered. But the consequence of this is usually handled pretty easily and we soon have what we wanted (hopefully).

 

On the other hand, if you’re calling a customer to finalize a potential sale that you pitched them earlier, even if you’re successful in reaching the person, (often this fails) he or she will tell you NO. And with good reason. It’s not time to make a decision and many people know this intuitively. Frequently they’re still in the process of getting information or they’re confused about something.

 

I strongly encourage you to read page 8 in your Guides, “What is a New Start?”, which has important information. Only you can know whether your project or sub-project qualifies as a new start or not, by reading this page.  If your action doesn’t qualify as a point of finality, then you don’t have a new start at all, and you can ignore the top line.
