OUR FAILED BOND MARKET: Inflation Arrives! Have you noticed that the interest rates for bonds, including Treasury bonds, are soaring? This is a big problem. You might think it would be good for savers, but it's not and here's why. Let's say you buy a $1000 bond now with a 5% interest rate of return. That probably sounds pretty good until you realize that just a couple of months ago, that same bond probably had a 3% interest rate attached to it or maybe even less. If you wait another month, they will probably offer you 6%, then 7% a month or so later. This is the problem. We're now in the phase of inflation, when interest rates are going to continue going up. This means if you buy that 5% bond today, in a month or two, you'll be sorry. You won't be able to sell that 5% bond easily, once rates go up again. That means if you need the money, you won't be able to get all your money out of it. You will have to sell it at a discounted value. But even if you hold it to maturity, you are still losing money. You could have had a higher rate of return if you had waited and not bought the 5% bond. So you lose money by holding the bonds too. This is known as a "failed bond market" and it means you can't win at this market. No matter what you do, you lose by holding bonds. So if you own bonds, now would be a good time to get out, before inflation goes up any higher. Get some gold instead. The consequences of this failed bond market are plenty. First of all, it means that ALL interest rates will go up now, especially since US Treasuries have failed. Yes, US Treasury bond prices have plunged faster than at any other time in our history. They're doing so because of the enormous deficit the US government is running and a lack of confidence that it can ever get out from under this enormous debt. At the moment, the federal deficit for this year (2009) is estimated to be $1.84 trillion or 13.4% of the Gross Domestic Product. But the actual deficit could end up being a great deal larger, since the estimate includes the assumtion that the economy will turn around and get better. This is the largest US deficit in history, and it's now a vertical spike on a graph, going straight up! Why can't the Fed buy up some bonds and make it all OK? It's been trying to do so for the past two months, but it hasn't worked. In fact the Fed has bought over $145.5 billion in bonds since March 25th, the largest buying spree ever by the Fed. But in order to buy up enough bonds to make a real difference, the Fed would have to print more money. That would be counter productive, since printing more dollars would just increase inflation and make bond prices drop even further. So, because the Fed cannot stop this, we can expect to see bond prices plunge for the rest of the year, as inflation rises and interest rates climb. Remember that we have an inflationary cycle now through December (Jupiter conjunct Chiron and Neptune) and these planets have been associated with stagflation in the past. What will this mean for your investments? Hopefully that you aren't in bonds! I still recommend gold as a good investment. Last year I finally convinced my parents to invest in some gold. The price then was around $670 per ounce. Now the spot price is over $960 per ounce. How many investments do you own that have increased by over 43% in less than a year? If you think the price of gold is high now, wait until you see what happens to it after another 6 - 7 months of stagflation! If possible, get real gold coins, preferably standard coins like gold Eagles, Maple Leafs, Kruggerands, Croners, etc, If you are planning to make a major purchase, I encourage you to make it sooner than later.
